HOME AND AWAY: RÓISÍN McGETTIGAN : IAN O’RIORDAN talks to the Wicklow athlete who is still based in Providence, Rhode Island, 10 years after leaving home following her Leaving Cert
It’s the summertime when the Wicklow countryside is in full bloom that Róisín McGettigan starts to miss home. Luckily for her it’s the time of year she does actually get home, although there’s not much time to enjoy the endless delights of the Garden of Ireland.
Although born and raised in Wicklow town, McGettigan now considers her home-from-home as Providence, Rhode Island – where for the past 10 years she’s been part of the increasingly strong Irish running community that includes Mary Cullen, Keith Kelly and Mark Carroll. Not that it feels like 10 years. click here to read more…

The end of the season has finally come upon us with the NCAA Championships at the University of Arkansas from June 11-13th. The Friars qualified three athletes, Danette Doetzel in 10,000m, Hannah Davidson in Steeple, and David McCarthy in the 1500m.
Danette Doetzel ended her PC career winning the NCAA Championships in the 10,000m. Danette entered the Championships ranked 4th in the NCAA and ran a very tactical race not taking the lead until the last 1000m of the race. Mile splits: 5:14.42, 10:30.61 (5:16.19), 15:56.27 (5:25.66), 21:26.16 (5:29.89), 27:00.45 (5:34.29), 32:14.31 (5:13.86). Danette sat patiently for the early part of the race, with last year’s NCAA Champion Lisa Koll of Iowa State leading the race. After more then half way Koll fell off the lead and the race leaders then went back and forth between Alex Becker of Tulsa and Clara Grant from West Virginia. Danette didn’t take the lead until the last 1000m, when she broke open the field and won by more than 14 seconds. Danette has become the 6th PC female athlete to win an NCAA title under Coach Ray Treacy.
Hannah Davidson ran a very aggressive race in the trials of the women steeple. With a fast pace by the early leader and the top 5 advancing to the finals, Hannah put herself in good position to advance running most of the race between 5th and 6th. Over the last few laps she was caught by a few runners to finish 9th in the heat and 18th overall in a time of 10:24.83.
David McCarthy led the first section of the 1500m trials for the first 600m to be taken over by the indoor NCAA Champion Lee Emanuel for the next 800m. David ended up finishing 3:41.71 in 5th place and qualified for the finals. Splits: 43.82, 1:43.49(59.67), 2:41.20(57.72), 3:41.71(1:00.52). In the finals David finished 12th with a time of 3:44.55. Splits: 46.93(46.93) 1:46.71(59.78) 2:45.19(58.48) 3:44.55(59.37).
